So I turned my laptop on today and the display didn’t come on. It’s happened to me before, so I disconnect the batter and hold the power button down for a minute or so, which normally solves it. That didn’t; so I plug the laptop up to my TV to see if it’ll display there. It displayed both on the TV and on the laptop itself! And I hadn’t done anything to it between trying it after cycling the battery and plugging it up to the TV.
It it just some weird glitch, or is there something I can do about it to prevent this from happening in the future?
Also this is part of my reasoning for probably building a PC in the future. Because this laptop is over 5 years old and does stuff like this occasionally. Since I never really use it as a laptop, (The battery is too shot for it to run without being plugged in) I figured I could build a PC and to replace it as well as my Xbox.

might be the strip connecting your motherboard to the screen is dying (dunno what its called exactly... its a fat flat strip of lectrickery magic... and its fragile)

I kind of know what you’re talking about. The only thing is, how does an HDMI cable fix the magic ribbon?

There could be a short in the display cable between the screen and the motherboard. Next time you boot it and there is no display, leave it running and press the key combo to change the display modes (laptop screen only, both, external only) and see if it comes on. Most are SUPPOSED to just automatically only display on the laptop screen if no external screen is plugged in, but maybe yours is different?

Hmmmm, maybe next time I’ll set an alarm on my phone and find a way to connect it to the laptop through the HDMI port, that way I won’t need my TV to turn it on!

Yup - it could be that dust has settled in or the cable has gotten loose - if you’re a little bld, try taking the laptop apart carefully and remove the video cable, blow dust out of the connector port on the motherboard, and then reattach it firmly and see if that makes a difference.
